The Northern region of Thailand attracts plenty of visitors to its wonderful mountainous landscapes, pretty towns, villages of unique hill tribe inhabitants, and endless national parks. It really is a beautiful wilderness area that has lots of appeal and an excursion from Chiang Mai during your visit is worthwhile.
Chiang Mai has traditionally been the capital of this historic region which was one of Thailand’s first civilized kingdoms. Aside from its locus in the broad and fertile Ping river valley, the Lanna Kingdom stretched as far north as Chiang Saen on the Maekhong river, itself forming the eastern border of Lanna, while the manifold hills to the west were also included.
South of Chiang Mai are two significant towns, the smaller of which is Lamphun which pre-dates Chiang Mai and also has its own moat and antiquities to boast of. It’s a mere 30 minute drive and beyond it is the Khun Tan mountain range, with its commendable national park, and the town of Lampang. Fewer tourists make it to this sleepy town but it does have some important temples and a charming atmosphere with its horse-drawn carriages.
Doi Inthanon is the highest mountain in the country and the fantastic national park and its incredible waterfalls is another rewarding day trip south from Chiang Mai. A similar day trip north is to the impressive caves below Doi Chiang Dao, the third highest and certainly most distinct of the peaks in the region.
Chiang Rai is Northern Thailand’s second most important centre and has an equally long, though less well preserved, history. Although less attractive than Chiang Mai, it’s a good base for exploring the famed Golden Triangle, where three countries meet at Sop Ruak at the confluence of the Ruak and Maekhong rivers. Nearby is the historic port town of Chiang Saen with its numerous important ruins. Also in the area is the unusual tea growing town of Mae Salong with its distinctly Chinese character, and Doi Tung, a lofty border area boasting a famous flower garden and temple.
One of the most popular excursions is the Mae Hong Son loop, a roller coaster three or four day ride into to the northwest wilderness, passing national parks, fantastic jungle and view points. The bohemian town of Pai, along the way, is popular with free spirited travellers and has a delightful atmosphere. The loop returns to Chiang Mai via the Doi Inthanon park.
These are among the highlights of a region packed with adventure, history, unique culture and magnificent beauty.
