Everybody knows Chiang Mai is one of the most exciting cities in Thailand, second in size only to Bangkok and with enough charm and beauty to satisfy even the most demanding of visitors. With Chiang Mai’s ever-bustling bar and restaurant scene, and new hot spots popping up all over, where does one begin? The good news is there’s something for everybody in this dynamic city, both modern and historical.

Fine Dining
For those who love dining in an atmosphere befitting of sipping on quality Champagne in thin crystal glasses, the French restaurants Le Crystal on Pa Tan Road by the Ping River and Le Coq d’Or on Koh Klang Road have wonderful atmospheres for such an occasion, where you will be provided with a taste of the Parisian.

If your preference is for Italian cuisine, try Piccola Roma Palace opposite The Chedi hotel, which offers exceptionally good food with a vast wine selection. Da Mattia on Chanklan Road is run by a Roman chef serving original dishes and where everything is homemade. Casa Antonio near the Empress Hotel was built to handle the overflow from its sister restaurant Giorgio on Prachasampan Road where home-made pasta is made fresh daily. Pulcinella Da Stefano  in an alley close to Tha Pae Gate and Girasole based in Kad Klang Vieng are similar in their popularity and where quality dishes and sophisticated decor can be enjoyed.

Mediterranean food lovers have the chance for a wonderful dining experience within a homely or garden atmosphere at Mi Casa on Suthep Road, opposite the back gate of Chiang Mai University. Delights here include Spanish Tapas and an assortment of soups.   The House on Moonmuang Road is perfect for all Scandinavian restaurant goers. Set in a warm atmosphere, recommended items include Tartar Tuna, lamb dishes and a wide selection of wine.

Turning our attentions to Asian cuisine, The Whole Earth  on Sri Donchai Road is perfect for Indian and Halal foods. For something Thai try Saenkam Terrace in Nai Fan Village on Irrigation Canal Road is our recommendation where both traditional and Northern Thai dishes are served with the Ping riverbank as a backdrop. For formal dining, Ban Suan is the answer; located in San Peesuer, the restaurant is designed by the National Artist Chulatat Kittibut.

Festive Feasts
If the size of the portions is as important as their appearance then it has to be The Duke’s; a Chicago-style eatery where massive portions of roasted spare ribs, steaks, pizzas and more are assured at one of its two branches on the river and Night Bazaar. The Steak House Pub & Restaurant in JJ Market is an alternative choice if you want a good feed and a good time.

Similarly, the authentic flavor of German pork knuckles with home-made sauerkraut and draught dark beer is offered up in generous helpings at German Hofbrauhaus  next to Chiang Mai Pavilion on Loy Kroh Road. For a Mexican experience visit Miguel’s at one of its several branches across the city where current culinary delights include sizzling fajitas, Mexican fried rice, sour cream, salsa and tortillas.

Looking for something less spicy? Try the Irish breakfast served at the UN Irish Pub on Rajavithee Road where one portion is plenty for three woman customers to share. Alternatively, sample some early morning treats at Bake & Bite on Chang Klan and Nimmanhaeminda Roads, where Eggs Benedict and the breakfast Burrito come highly recommended.

Romantic Dining
There are plenty of restaurants in Chiang Mai but only a few can provide you and your beloved with a truly romantic setting. Dalaabaa on Bamroongraj Road is one such place whose culinary items are sophisticatedly designed and served in a romantically soft environment. Set by the Ping River near Nawarat Bridge, Deck 1 offers you fine dining and an impressive selection of wine within a less-is-more surrounds.

or music lovers Tara Bar on Chiang Mai-Lampoon Road is a must as whether you take a seat by the river or choose to chill on the terrace a variety of live tunes will accompany your meal. However if you are hoping to enjoy the scenic city landscape from a bird’s eye view, we recommend Palad Tawanron  near the back entrance of Chiang Mai Zoo.

Timeless Favorites
Not many restaurants can be considered one of the city’s legitimate landmarks. Amongst the few that can, The Riverside, owned by two foreigners in Chiang Mai, has had an excellent reputation for over a decade, and just a few steps away is The Good View, notable for its other branches in Bangkok and Laos. 100 meters from here The Brasserie attracts a number of foreign visitors fond of Blues music and Bubble at Porn Ping Hotel on Charoen Pratet Road has also been a fashionable nightlife destination for many a foreign visitor to Chiang Mai.

On the other side of the city, on Nimmanhaeminda Road, Monkey Club and Warm Up Cafe are also recognized as two of the city’s favored night spots. Anyone who said nightlife businesses are uncertain, should come and see how it’s done at these two pubs.

Wine after Dine
Around a decade ago, wine was a rarity in this country and thus carried an expensive price tag. Today it is has become one of the city’s favorite tipples, served in most restaurants and bars. Darling the Wine Pub  on Huay Kaew Road was one of the first wine bars to open in Chiang Mai and Glass Onion  at Rooms offers you a cozy air-conditioned atmosphere to enjoy a glass. But if you’re looking for an open air environment Wine Connection is perfect, where drinks by the bottle and glass are available.

Top of the Pops
Of the latest wave of Chiang Mai restaurants Tha Chang at JJ Market is one of the most popular, where retro-decoration of eighties Thailand has been applied, arousing the customers’ sense of nostalgia. Nearby is Sweet and Easy where live music and monthly themed parties are the star attractions. Located in an alley opposite Suandok Hospital, Bombay is also a place to chill out with fine live music and dishes served at competitive prices. Run by the same owner, Fabrique is a beautifully decorated modern night club especially for those who love to dance.

City Vibes
Off the beaten track alternatives include Rasta Art Bar on Moonmuang Road and Roots Rock Reggae at Boon Market behind Yuparaj Wittayalai School, perfect for Reggae aficionados.

In the same area can be found Zoe in Yellow; run by Turkish business partners, a Turkish buffet is available on Thursdays with Latin music for salsa dancing. If rock and trance music are your scene then check out Heaven Beach opposite Roots Rock Reggae.

For a local experience, Sudsanan Pub and Khuay Chab Yuan on Huay Kaew Road opposite Central Kad Suan Kaew is suitable for anyone who loves folk music. On Suthep Road, 22 Bar is a tiny after dusk hang-out for those looking for drinks in a secluded atmosphere. Blues music fans will love Chai Blue House, which was formerly a gallery, and Drunken Flower at Soi 13 on Nimmanhaeminda Road is another trendy place to chill out.

Your fun-filled night out begins right here. Start browsing Chiang Mai’s bars and restaurants and find the place that’s right for you.
